Sassafras came into our rescue program on August 27, 2016. Sassafras came into our rescue program from the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division along with 2 other horses. Sassafras is a Beautiful, Bay, Quarter Horse, Mare. Sassafras is estimated to be 2 years of age. Sassafras is thin and appears has multiple wounds all over her. One can only guess what happened to her. But the level of wounds all over her certainly doesn't leave one to believe those occurred by accident. She is now all healed up and looking great. Updated pictures to come. She is a sweet girl but a bit un-trusting. She is learning that people are good and she is finding that when they scratch her in just the right spot that she loves them. Sassafras is halter broke and broke to lead. She needs a lot of hands on attention and a humane level of training. She is a super sweet girl and has a lot of potential in the right hands. Sassafras has a current negative coggins, up to date on vaccinations, deworming, and hoof maintenance. If you are interested in adopting this sweet girl, please submit an adoption application or call/email to schedule an appointment to come visit Sassafras.

Sassafras was picked for our 6th Annual Blaze's Ride to the Rescue Trainer Challenge. She was chosen by Youth Trainer Sherrod Ocker. Sherrod will be working with Sassafras for the next 132 days, turning Sassafras into a dependable riding companion. Sherrod will be going against 4 Youth Trainers in our Trainer's Challenge. We also have 11 Adult Trainers competing in our Trainer's Challenge. Competition is set for May 20, 2017 at the Heart of Oklahoma, Shawnee Expo Center, Shawnee, Oklahoma. Update May 23, 2017 Sassafras and Sherrod are this year's 5th Place winners of the Youth division of our 6th Annual Blaze's Ride to the Rescue Trainer's Challenge. These two did a remarkable job and quite the team! So very proud of Sassafras and Sherrod for an amazing job well done. You can watch Sassafras' performance with Youth Trainer Sherrod Ocker here: Team Sassafras.. Congratulations Sassafras and Sherrod! Your performance is one to remember! Sassafras is now seeking her forever, loving home. This is a remarkable little horse and it blows us away that she was not adopted during the competition, but I know her family is out there somewhere and waiting to come adopt this precious girl. Sassafras has been to 3 Working Equitation Clinics, 2 Lessons with Zeke Zacharias, 3 different obstacle courses and 12 benefit trail rides ranging from 3 to 120 other horses and riders, averaging 1 to 6 hours long. She stands for the farrier, takes worming and shots well, trailer loads, stands tied, stalls, catches in the pasture easily, stands to saddle both on the right and left side. Sassafras lunges in a walk and trot both ways, half pass left or right, sidepass off fence left or right. She knows leg and seat cues, leg yields, walks through water, walks up/down hills, and she is fine with dogs. She will lead or drag on the trail. She has a nice whoa and back up, disengage both hips well on ground or in the saddle. She disengages both shoulders on ground or in the saddle. Handles obstacles well and is road savvy. This is a super nice young horse and ready for someone to grow with and continue training. She is certainly one you don't want to miss out on and will make an excellent addition to anyone's family. Sassafras has a current negative coggins, up to date on vaccinations, deworming, teeth floating and hoof maintenance. If you are interested in giving this girl a wonderful forever, loving home, please submit an adoption application or call/email to schedule an appointment to come visit Sassafras.

Sassafras has been adopted to a wonderful family in Mustang, Oklahoma. Sassafras is going to be extremely well loved and spoiled rotten in her forever, loving home. We are thrilled that this special girl found the forever, loving family she deserves where she will be showered with love and attention.
